Step back in time with us and discover the rich history of “The Men of Sandtown.” Founded in 1972 by visionary local businessmen, our journey began with a shared goal: to uplift and transform the Sandtown Winchester community. Through the establishment of the Fish and Hunt Club, located at 1343 Mosher St., these men embarked on a mission of camaraderie, outdoor sportsmanship, and community service.

As proud residents and business owners, they sought to combat the blight and neglect plaguing their beloved neighborhood, still reeling from the aftermath of the 1968 riots. Their clubhouse became a beacon of hope and positivity, where integrity and camaraderie flourished among Sandtown’s finest.

Over the years, the club’s influence waned as its founding members passed away, leaving behind a void in the community. But in 1993, a young entrepreneur named Eugene “Baldy” Leseane stepped forward with a vision to revitalize Sandtown and preserve its legacy.

With the opening of the Sandtown Barber Shop in June 1993, Baldy breathed new life into the community. In 2007, he rekindled the spirit of the Men of Sandtown, recognizing its potential to inspire positive change. Led by President William “Dussie” Humphrey III and Vice President Nathaniel “Sam Bey” Smith, the club once again became a catalyst for empowerment and mentorship.

In April 2010, tragedy struck with Dussie’s passing, but his legacy lived on as the club redoubled its efforts to serve the community. Under the leadership of Dr. Albert Stokes and a dedicated board of directors, the Men of Sandtown evolved into a nonprofit organization committed to youth mentorship, education, and community development.

Today, we continue to honor the legacy of the Men of Sandtown through our unwavering commitment to building a stronger, more vibrant community. Join us on this journey of empowerment and transformation.
